Five Tips to Make it Through Holiday Renovations

Nothing beats remodeling a house to make it the home of your dreams. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a lot of hassles involved in the process. Renovations are hard to live through at any point during the year, but when the holidays are in full swing, things get especially hectic and difficult. Unlike building new, when you remodel, you have to live with it, literally, day in and out. These are five tips to make it through the season unscathed from our Charleston custom homes & remodeling experts.

Realize Things Might Go Slower

When the holidays come around, things shut down and that might lead to things getting a little off schedule. If you plan ahead knowing that things might not go exactly as planned and that there might be delays, then you won’t be so frustrated if they do. Let’s face it: it is unlikely that things are going to go into a faster mode when many businesses are closed and people are taking time off, but if you put a buffer in place for the overall schedule, you will end up not getting so upset about it.

Focus on Family

A lot of times, we place so much importance on tradition, settings, and places. This holiday, remember that it isn’t about where you spend time with the ones you love; it is all about enjoying the time that you have together. It might be that you can’t host your entire family or make the gourmet dinner that you usually do, but look at it in a positive light. If you aren’t in charge of taking care of everything down to the food, you can actually sit back, relax, and let someone else steer the holiday ship. How freeing is that?

Consider Moving Out

If you are doing extensive renovations, it is like a hurricane coming through and you have two choices: you can ride it out or evacuate. Instead of settling on staying through misery, why not rent a place for the holidays and be more comfortable away from home? You can use your renovations as an excuse to hit the road for the holidays to visit family or rent a beach house.

Be Communicative

If you have changes that are happening due to the holidays in your life, make sure to express those changes to your contractor. They will most certainly help to work around what you need, but you need to let them know. The sooner you can let them know if there are special dates or events they need to work around, they can pivot so that things won’t get too off-track and you can have the downtime you need to handle everything.

Take Some Time to Destress

The holidays can be stressful enough without renovations, but having your home torn up is an additional burden that can really up the stress factor. If you feel like things are becoming too much, take the time you need to step away and treat yourself. Take some time to have quiet dinners, go for a walk, enjoy a hobby, or make an appointment for a massage. The key is to breathe deeply and know that although it is a hassle, once it is done, you will have the home you always dreamed of.

Renovating is a very exciting time, but it does not come without some stress. If you want to get through the holidays unscathed, try to remember that whatever you are going through to get over the finish line will be well worth it when you walk through your beautifully renovated space. The key to keeping a calm head during the holidays is to remember: it is all about family, friends, and being with those you love, no matter where it is or what condition your home is in. At O’Connor Homes, we try to respect and acknowledge your presence, and whether it is the holidays or any other time of year, we want to ensure that we are taking all measures we can to make it as seamless of a process as possible.
